The combined Cornell/Columbia Plastic Surgery Residency program offers countless opportunities to participate in both clinical and basic science research. The attending staff at both campuses have robust clinical research projects, including clinical research fellows to assist in resident research. Additionally, both Drs Jason Spector and June Wu have basic science laboratories, which focus on translational bioregenerative research and vascular anomalies, respectively. Research is not only conducted on our prestigious home Ivy League campuses of Cornell and Columbia, but residents have the opportunity to participate in research at numerous affiliate sites. Translational Research Avenue, as it is called, clustered within a two block radius on York Avenue in the borough of Manhattan, also includes Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (a renowned Cancer Center), Rockefeller University (The world’s leading biomedical research university), and the Hospital for Special Surgery (the top rated Orthopedic Hospital in the US). The combination of these diverse institutions gives residents ample resources to explore research that aligns with their clinical interests.
Each year, residents participate in various research projects. Residents are encouraged to submit their work to national meetings and are provided with funding to attend these meetings. Each year our program is well represented at most national plastic surgery meetings, with an impressive track record of winning awards. Additionally, our academic year concludes with our annual resident research night where each resident presents a novel research project to invited guest judges from around the country.
