Under the direction of Cheguevara Afaneh, M.D., F.A.C.S., a comprehensive simulation program has been developed. Beginning at intern orientation, residents complete a comprehensive review of all core surgical skills including all bedside procedures.
These skills are taught in our state-of-the-art Skills Acquisition and Innovation Laboratory (SAIL). Each resident must display competence in SAIL by completing a series of Entrustable Professional Activity modules prior to working with patients. The simulation program also provides residents with rotation-based modules to complete during core surgical rotations and team-based training during away rotations.
Residents also complete courses to help prepare for the mandatory FES and FLS examinations. At six month intervals over the course of the program, residents complete mandatory technical examinations to help the resident and the program monitor technical development.
The focus of the simulation curriculum is to help develop the technical and communication skills needed to develop the leaders in academic surgery. SAIL is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for residents.
