Weill Cornell Medicine’s Department of Surgery has a long and proud tradition of surgical innovation. Today, we continue to honor that legacy by developing and pioneering new techniques and procedures that ensure better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients after surgery.
For example, department chair Dr. Fabrizio Michelassi drew on his experience and expertise in treating Crohn’s disease when he developed the Michelassi strictureplasty, a procedure designed to avoid sacrificing large amounts of the bowel at the time of surgery and facilitating quiescence of the acute disease affecting the intestinal loops.
Surgical innovation in the treatment of vascular disease and gastrointestinal cancer are major strengths of the department, but we support the creation of new, viable offerings in musculoskeletal care overall that improve clinical outcomes, enhance the patient experience and/or lower the cost to deliver care in a meaningful way.
