General Surgery Residency Surgeon-Scientist Training Pathway

General Surgery Residency Surgeon-Scientist Training Pathway

The Weill Cornell Medicine Department of Surgery at NewYork Presbyterian is excited to announce the launch of our American College of Surgeons Blue Ribbon Committee national pilot track for the Surgeon-Scientist Training Pathway (SSTP) in the upcoming 2026-27 interview cycle. The General Surgery residency program has allocated one position of the categorical class (1 of our 8 total positions) for this exciting pilot program. Currently, dedicated research and professional development time (2 years) is an expected part of our categorical residency program. The SSTP program will not impact our current categorical training model, the SSTP is designed for applicants who have previously demonstrated a significant commitment to research and can demonstrate their interest in a career as a surgeon -scientist through prior research training, a meaningful publication record, and the current ability to clearly define how this program would help them achieve their future career goals. The program is not intended as a second application pathway, and candidates should be considerate of applying to this track without meeting these applications requirements.

We look forward to providing applicants with more details on the program shortly including more details on the selection, eligibility, curriculum, support, and research opportunities. We will also provide additional NRMP information to apply to the program by September 1, 2026.
